X5 Retail Group to introduce new store concept
Russia-based X5 Retail Group is going to introduce a new format “Pyaterochka Maxi” which will be developed according Walmart’s Bodega Aurrera concept operated in Mexico. Bodega Aurrrera is a hard-line discount hypermarket concept offering a limited assortment of basic merchandise, focusing on food and housewares. Average sales area stands at just under 5,000 square metres, with each unit offering some 45,000 SKUs. The Bodega Aurrera format is developed in low income areas and small cities. This store concept will perfectly suit X5’s strategy of penetrating regional cities where consumer spending per capita is much lower than in big Russian cities.
