Wal-Mart Central America announces growth plans for 2009

Wal-Mart Centroamérica has announced its growth plans for 2009. It plans to open 22 new stores, an investment of USD30 million and will create more than 1,000 direct jobs and an even greater number of indirect jobs. The retailer said: “In a year when the economic environment of the region is presented as extremely challenging, this level of growth and investment demonstrates the commitment of the company to the welfare of families in Central America.” The company also announced a realignment of its organisational structure to increase its operational efficiency, support its growth plans and help reduce its total costs. These changes result in a reduction of approximately 200 jobs in administrative offices throughout the region, with immediate effect. "Wal-Mart Central America is aware of the implications of this decision on impacted employees," said Aquileo Sanchez, Director of Corporate Communications.
