McDonald’s enjoys “strongest ever year” in UK

According to local reports, McDonald’s has enjoyed its “strongest ever year” in the UK despite the economic downturn. McDonald’s UK CEO Steve Easterbrook said the company had achieved 11 successive quarters of growth. The chain has been successful in the UK due to consumers looking for cheaper eating out options, as well as the investment the company has put into remodelling existing outlets. The company estimates a refurbished outlet sees a 6% sales increase in the first 12 months. Easterbrook said McDonald’s had revamped around two thirds of its total network, with the rest to be completed by 2010. The company is also seeing returns on its investment in new coffee machines which have allowed it to expand its drinks menu. "It's delivering results for us," Easterbrook said. "We sold 10 million more cups of coffee in 2008 than 2007."
